A successful all-day sit starts with the right pack and a well-thought-out layering plan. The pack carries everything you need, while your clothing system protects you from heat, cold, wind and moisture. Getting both right means you stay focused on the hunt, not on sore shoulders or a chill.

When choosing a pack, focus on fit and function before brand hype. Look for a capacity that matches your typical day - 30 to 45 liters works for most sit setups. Adjustable shoulder straps, a padded waist belt and load-lifters help distribute weight evenly, reducing fatigue. A dedicated hydration sleeve and easy-access pockets for calls, snacks and a first-aid kit keep essentials within reach.

Your layering system should be modular, allowing you to add or remove pieces as the temperature shifts. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that hugs the skin, add an insulating mid layer such as a fleece or lightweight down, and finish with a breathable outer shell that blocks wind and rain. Zippered vents on the mid and outer layers let you fine-tune airflow without fully stripping down.

A practical packing tip is to place the heaviest items close to your back and centered over your hips - think water, extra clothing and a compact emergency blanket. Keep your call device, snacks and a map in a front pocket for quick grabs. Finally, test your pack and layers on a short hike before the big day; small adjustments now save big discomfort later.
