The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently celebrated Seal and Sea Lion Week, highlighting the importance of these animals as indicators of ocean health. As part of their conservation efforts, NOAA conducted a comprehensive aerial survey of ice seals in the Arctic, covering over 24,000 miles of sea ice. The survey used multispectral camera systems with artificial intelligence to detect and document seals. Additionally, new research on haul-out behavior aims to improve abundance estimates for ice seals in Alaska, supporting conservation and monitoring efforts.
