Understanding how mature bucks move is the first step to a successful camera setup. These animals are cautious, often using the same travel routes year after year, so a well‑planned camera network can reveal patterns that most hunters miss.

Cellular trail cameras give you real‑time access to images without the need to trek back to the site. Choose a model with reliable signal strength and a battery life that matches your season length. Position the camera near a power source if possible, but keep it concealed to avoid spooking the buck.

Placement matters more than the camera’s specs. Aim for a height of 4 to 6 feet, angled slightly downward, and focus on natural funnels such as game trails, ridgelines, and water crossings. Use natural cover to hide the camera’s body and avoid placing it directly on a trail where a buck might see the lens.

Patterning involves spreading several cameras across a known buck corridor to map movement and identify hot spots. Start with a wide spacing of 300 to 500 yards, then tighten the grid around areas where bucks are repeatedly photographed. Review the images weekly and adjust camera locations to follow the buck’s evolving routes.
