Flash Flood Forces Evacuations and Closes Phantom Ranch, North Kaibab Trail

A flash-flood struck Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on Aug. 29 at about 2:30 p.m., prompting immediate safety actions. The National Park Service reported that the surge caused the closure of Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail.

By the morning of Aug. 30, 62 people had been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the trail, with additional evacuations planned for Cottonwood Campground and Phantom Ranch. The effort is being coordinated with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
