The Bureau of Land Management announced today that humane gather operations are beginning in the Sulphur Herd Management Area of Cedar City, Utah. The effort aims to remove vulnerable horses from drought‑stressed rangelands so they can recover health and avoid the dangers of long treks for food and water. Without active management, wild horse numbers can double every four to five years, depleting forage and water and increasing the risk of starvation, dehydration and conflict with private landowners. The Sulphur area covers roughly 230,000 acres, and the BLM’s action is intended to restore sustainable conditions for the herd.
