The Bureau of Land Management wrapped up a wild‑horse gather operation near Reno on Oct 22, moving 323 horses to safety after the herd outgrew the capacity of the land. With limited forage and water, the animals face hunger, dehydration, exhaustion and injury, so the gather aimed to protect their long‑term health and improve range conditions. The North Complex, including the Dogskin Mountains, Flanigan and Granite Peak herd areas, has been hit hard by the Bug and Fred Mountain fires that burned about 93733 acres, plus ongoing drought that further reduces plant growth. The loss of nearly 6200 acres of habitat in the herd management areas has left insufficient food and water, prompting the BLM action.
